Here’s a synopsis of some proven communications basics to keep in mind — especially when your goal is to correct/improve behavior and/or cooperation:

  1. Use “I” statements. (“I am concerned because…”)
  2. Use a question instead of a statement. (Rather than “You need to do this right now,” use “Is there anything you need from me so you can get this done right away?”)
  3. Use “we” statements. (Instead of “How will you make sure this never happens again?” ask “How can we make sure…?”)
  4. “You can do this” statements. (“I am sure you have some great ideas on how to deal with what just happened. If you need any help, just let me know.”)
