When she gets an applicant who is working elsewhere, she does a brief telephone screen first and, if she is still interested, she goes to that person’s place of work and has him or her wait on her. This way she gets to see the applicant in action without that person knowing who she is. Sometimes she even complains or acts like a difficult customer to see how they handle the situation.
She said it is amazing when the people who pass this “test” come in for the interview and recognize her. It’s a whole different interview and she said the success she’s had has made it well worth the effort. (Like I always say, “Hire Tough, Manage Easy!”)
