I’ve been using this Sam Walton quote in my presentations for years: “The most important decision a manager makes every day is who is allowed in the doors to help take care of the customers.”
It has occurred to me recently, however, that even more important than those hiring decisions, is the decision you make when hiring a manager because while people are eager to join companies, they most often quit because of their managers.
A great manager is always an employee magnet. I just met a resort restaurant manager in Suncadia, Washington who attracts top-notch, experienced staff from Seattle — 90 minutes away! That’s what a great boss is worth to them.
