The 10 Commandments of Employee On-boarding

  1. Thou shalt commit thyself to being a great employer who, in turn, easily attracts and hires great people.
  2. Thou shalt tell the truth about the job.
  3. Thou shalt make the first hour and the first day the best day a new employee will ever have on any job.
  4. Thou shalt make orientation not only about what you want and need, but, more importantly, about what’s in it for them.
  5. Thou shalt take the time to prepare so, when they show up the first day, they can get to work.
  6. Thou shalt assign a buddy or mentor.
  7. Thou shalt develop a positive relationship with the new employee,
  8. Thou shalt check back regularly with new employees.
  9. Thou shalt never let a new employee go home frustrated, especially during the first week on the job.
  10. Thou shalt think beyond the first day and week and reinforce the relationship during the delivery of the  first paycheck, at the end of the first month, during the first performance review, and on the first employment anniversary.

If you follow these commandments with the intention to hire the best and give them an outstanding on-boarding process that builds lasting relationships, you will soon see your organization become just that – the best.
