You Cannot Motivate a Rock*

You can promise the rock a reward or you can threaten to punish it, but, no matter what you do, that rock just ain’t gonna move.

The only way to make a rock move is to pick it up yourself and move it out of your way.

(*In this analogy, “rock” is code for a substandard, second-rate employee with an attitude problem.)
